The Square Studio Split EP Series:

The Square Studio Split Series is a group of limited-edition split EP's featuring some of the best local songwriters in the Central New York area! There are currently a total of four planned releases in the series, each featuring two Square artists per album. The splits will be released within 3-4 month increments of each other throughout the next year. The first split was released on June 28th, 2011 and is available to order below!

The first installment of The Square Studio Split Series features two fantastic singer/songwriters and longtime friends. Trevor Grant and Phil Smo are two of the most talented artists around and have each contributed three new tracks to this release.

Trev's side revolves around the rawness derived from reducing the number of musical contributors in his songs while increasing the complexity of each remaining element. All three songs were recorded as a basic trio of drums, bass, and piano, and this stripped down approach serves to further emphasize the sincerity in Trev's vocal delivery. Similarities can be drawn to songwriters like Ben Folds, Conor Oberst, and Tim Kasher, however, fans of these artists will likely find Trev's side of this split to be more refreshing than it is familiar.

Phil's side takes a slightly different approach. Each song features a sizable and dynamic group of melodic and rhythmic contributors, assisting in the development of three very different musical storylines. The elegance within these arrangements is one of a kind, and the variation in Phil's vocals greatly intensifies these intricacies. Fans of Phil's previous work will be at home with a track like 'My Cap' but will undoubtedly be surprised by the aggression of 'Mr. Man, The Pilot' and the humor in 'Kung Fu Booty.'
